Romanian president Traian Basescu accused mass-media company owners of trying to discredit the state’s authorities and asked the government counter this thesis through its actions.

Basescu said there is “an exaggerated phenomenon” at the moment, namely “the discrediting of the state”.

He added this discrediting is unfolded by the owners of large media companies "with only one purpose: it is not the authority of the state that needs to be respected, but us, the moguls, without wondering how we have obtained income from FNI, Crescent or elsewhere."

The head of state asked the members of the government to see through this "obvious and deliberate policy of discrediting the authorities of the state."
