Romanian president Traian Basescu on Wednesday, after the meeting with Afghan president Hamid Karzai, expressed hope the NATO summit in Bucharest would draw a clear vision regarding Afghanistan.
"We hope this summit will be capable to firmly engage in a vision regarding Afghanistan, covering the military, economic, social and institutional aspects of the issue," Basescu said, adding that otherwise, “NATO’s success in Afghanistan will bear question marks".
Basescu also said that "NATO countries, international institutions, such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and other donors must get involved and work out an economic and institutional development system for Afghanistan, beside the fight against terror."
The Romanian president added he discussed with his Afghan counterpart about future participations of Romanian and NATO troops in Afghanistan.
"We both concluded that mere military intervention is not enough and such intervention alone will not lead to the results NATO expects,” Basescu said.
Basescu thanked Karzai and the Afghan government for the determination they have shown in backing NATO states in Afghanistan’s difficult path toward democracy.
"We assure you that Romania will stand by all its commitments to Afghanistan," Basescu said.
