Romanian Pres Says His Suspension Was Coup D’État

Asked what could be done to further the fight against corruption, Basescu said warnings from Brussels no longer have a strong impact and Romanian institutions have become the main players.

"It is one of the voids I feel in my soul for this mandate: if only the partnership with the government had worked, if only the government had not fooled itself with ousting the democrats from the government, if only this treacherous negotiation had not been pursued, as a whole. And I can share this with you, because such things need to be known: Tariceanu negotiated with the social democrats, especially with Iliescu, two things – the liberals would vote for the suspension of the president and oust the democrats from the government and, in exchange, the social democrats guaranteed support until the end of the mandate. It was one of Iliescu’s objectives, who is an expert in coups d’état, as what happened in Parliament on April 19 was a democracy-coated coup d’état," Basescu said.

He added the Constitution needs to be amended.

"We cannot leave the Constitution without updates and the members of parliament without responsibility," said the head of state.

According to him, the members of parliament are those who oppose the update of the Constitution.

"I am surprised by this obsessive attention I receive from the head of state. I have refrained from making any comments on this topic for a year or so and I was not the one who initiated the suspension, but it is clear that he is simply an obsessed person! This phenomenon, this obsession, is worrisome for him," Iliescu said for Romanian radio station Info Pro.
