Romanian Pres Says Magyars Were Fair In Talks On Kosovo
Romanian president Traian Basescu stated that the Magyar minority party (UDMR) was fair in the talks held Monday at his office, but he added that he scolded the party, saying that in regions Harghita and Covasna "there are aspects that might be interpreted as ethnic purification” against Romanians.

Basescu was asked how he would comment on the statements of party leaders, according to which UDMR opposed the draft statement presented by him on the Kosovo issue.
"I have not noticed opposition from UDMR in the talks and maybe I should tell you, even though I don’t make a habit out of forwarding statements might by one party or another, the UDMR delegation itself said there can be no comparison, or similitude between the situation in Kosovo and the situation in Romania," Basescu said.
He added, however, that he did not follow the public statements made by UDMR leaders after the talks at his office.
"I can say that, in personal talks, I admitted that there are still things to be done for minorities, just like I scolded UDMR pointing out that there are aspects in Harghita and Covasna that might be interpreted as elements of ethnic purification directed against Romanians. Therefore, we must work together with minorities, to make them feel well in Romania, whatever the case may be," Basescu said.
