Basescu said the visit to Ramallah is the conclusion to a series of meetings he had with leaders in the Middle East, which targeted security in the region, which is essential for Romania’s security. “In the Middle East, Romania has special economic interests,” the president said.
"Basically, my visit to Ramallah is preceded by meetings with the president of Egypt, the president of Iraq, the president of Lebanon, the president of Jordan and the president of Israel."
Basescu said the talks he will hold Sunday will involve topics such as terrorism and energy.
The president said the Romanian side feels the peace process in the area “can be continued now, given the political evolutions in the region."
Basescu mentioned "the objective that needs to be attained is two states, Palestine and Israel, in peace and security.” He added the topic of security is extremely important for Israel.
"Nobody can ask Israel to tolerate acts of terrorism on its own soil or insecurity at the borders. At the same time, the topics will involve terrorism, given that the Middle east is a supplier of acts of terrorism that take place right on the territories of the states in this region,” Basescu said upon leaving for Ramallah.
On the other hand, the president said in Ramallah the Ministries of Foreign Affairs in the two states will sign an agreement of cooperation. He added he will meet with Romanians in the area, recalling the problems these people had with their documents when the military events in the area required their evacuation. "This is why, we are especially preoccupied by this matter," Basescu said.
He added he will offer more details in the press conference held after the meetings with the Prime Minister and the President of the Authority.
