The Romanian head of state met and exchanged gifts with Emir Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
The president's office said in a press release Kuwait extended an invitation to the Romanian president to attend celebrations in sign of recognition of the role Romania had in helping Kuwait break free from Iraqi rule.
"As a country that held the presidency of the UN Security Council in August 1990, Romania played an important role in the adoption of Council resolutions that led to the removal of Iraqi forces from its territory," the release reads.
Basescu is expected to return to Romania Saturday evening.
