Asked whether the head of state can become member of the Democrat Liberal Party in view of the election, Toader said he cannot, because he would no longer stay president.

"We're talking about a constitutional procedure. He is the acting president and he will run independently, supported by the Democratic Liberal Party," Toader added.

"All presidents had to comply with this provision, because the declaration accepting the candidacy is the same for everyone and the head of state cannot be a party's candidate if he is independent. Politically speaking, he is not a member of that party and this must be included in the law," Toader explained.

Section 8 of article 9 of the law on presidential elections states that presidential candidates need not be a member of any political party, therefore candidates may run independently.
