Basescu proposed tackling the education system’s „profound” reform from the perspective of individuals responsible for the country’s present and future.
The president said Romania’s education system is the worst in the European Union with regard to performance and is in a continuous decline, as successive analyses show. He said the Romanian system must be urgently adapted to the realities of economy and competition.
A debate entitled „The Law on National Education – a step forward for Romania” is currently underway at the Palace of Parliament. The event was organized by the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports, under the patronage of Roberta Anastase, President of the Chamber of Deputies.
The Social Democratic Party and Liberal Party, both in opposition, announced last week they would not attend the debate.
