Romanian President Criticizes Govt For Lack Of Consulates In Spain

Romanian President Traian Basescu met Monday evening at Romania’s Embassy in Madrid with representatives of the Romanian community, and criticized the Romanian government for the low number of consulates in Spain.

The meeting with Romanians in Spain was also attended by foreign minister Adrian Cioroianu, commerce minister Ovidiu Silaghi and labor ministry state secretary Valer Bindea.

Romanians asked the president and foreign minister to speed up the opening of new consular offices in Spain, saying that would help solve many of the problems Romanians face there.

Cioroianu replied that Romanian authorities are confronted with an acute shortage of staff and the large number of requests by Romanians in Spain exceed authorities’ capacity to offer prompt solutions.

He announced three new consular offices would be open soon in Castilla de la Mancha, Saragossa and Almeria, however, he could not give an exact date.

President Basescu intervened and said that a government that wished to solve this problem would have hired Romanians who already live in Spain to work for consular offices and would have stopped complaining about the shortage of staff.

Basescu also told the representatives of the Romanian community that the country needs them and he hopes they will consider returning to work in Romania when they see wages going up.
