“I don’t think they will announce too much, except for losing the elections (…) This is the last thing we need, for a felon criminally sentenced for referendum fraud to run for presidency,” the Romanian head of state said.
Liviu Dragnea said on Tuesday that an announcement on the social-democrats’ plans for presidential elections, scheduled to take place later this year, will be made on Sunday evening, after the polls close for the European Parliament elections.
However, the social-democrat leader said on Wednesday that his statement was misinterpreted and tried to temper expectations, stating that “nothing spectacular” will be announced on Sunday.
“I did not say anything else than what I’ve been saying for months, that we will discuss, present our point of view regarding the presidential candidacy after the European Parliament elections,” Dragnea said.
The PSD chief added that he supports the idea of the PSD-ALDE coalition having a common candidate in the presidnetial elections, and also stated that he “believes” the two parties would “reach this result”.
