Romanian President: Lack Of Control In Healthcare Spending Is Unacceptable

Basescu said the healthcare system is underfinanced because of the low employee contribution to the health insurance fund and the low number of contributors compared to beneficiaries.

On July 25, the president said that the minister of Health and the president of the Health Insurance House were to either bring expenses under control, or leave. He also said that, last year, the Government diverted money from other sectors and used 2.5 billion lei (EUR590 million) to eliminate the healthcare system’s arrears, but they are almost back at RON2 billion now.
