Basescu said Romania goes trough a difficult period, which requires solidarity.

For that, Basescu said he will stand united with the ministers, despite not being too fond of any of them.

The head of state wished good luck to the new Youth and Sport minister, Sorina Luminita Placita, and assured her of his full support.

Placinta replaced Monica Iacob Ridzi, who resigned amid a fraud scandal in connection with state funds used to organize festivities on Youth Day.

Basescu harshly criticized the activity of the parliament committee that looked into the funds spent by Ridzi while in office, saying the committee exceeded its attributions when it gave a “verdict” in the case.

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies decided late June to set up an inquiry committee to probe allegations of fund misappropriation against Ridzi.

The allegations were forwarded by liberal MPs, who claimed Ridzi mishandled money allocated for organizing the celebrations on Youth Day.

After analyzing the case, the parliament committee recommended Ridzi be dismissed and requested prosecution proceedings on charges of embezzlement and abuse of office.
