“I myself am a person who takes liberties beyond the limits imposed by my position. I understand very well the need for freedom of every Romanian citizen and I can tell you that I equally regard the right to freedom for Romanians, Romanian citizens of Magyar ethnicity, Serbians, Ukrainians and for all 18 minorities in Romania. We all have the right to preserve our culture, our customs we feel connected to,” the head of state told participants in the manifestations.
Basescu said he attended the celebration in Miercurea Ciuc city, central Romania, out of respect for the Hungarians who live in Romania and for the events that happened during the Hungarian Revolution.
On Thursday, Basescu met his Hungarian counterpart Solyom Laszlo, who is on a four-day visit to Romania.
