Romania’s President Traian Basescu visited Tuesday the eastern village of Saucesti, which was heavily affected by floods earlier this summer, and urged constructors to finish works on the dam protecting the village by winter.

Local authorities told the president works are not advancing at a faster pace because some of the locals refuse expropriations. Local authorities also said works have been started for a 1.8-kilometer section of the dam, adding only half the money needed for the section has been received from the Environment Ministry.

„I found a minister order of December last year disbursing the money for a 18-kilometer dam,” Basescu said, adding he would keep a close eye on dam works because he promised locals they would be protected from future floods.

The president left Saucesti to inspect sewage works in Bogdan Voda, eastern Romania.
