Basescu said he asked the parties to set up Constitution revision committees and make the switch to a single-chamber Parliament, one of the issues voted on in the 2009 referendum. The other, reducing the number of MPs to a maximum of 300, can be adopted via law, Basescu said.
Should the parties "ignore" the result of the referendum, Basescu said he will assume responsibility for the Constitution revision himself, on the Government's recommendation.
The Romanian head of state added he has pressed the Parliament to adopt the two legal procedure Codes with urgency.
Changing to a single-chamber Parliament and reducing the number of MPs were two issues championed by Basescu during the election campaign of 2009. In a national referendum held on November 21, the majority of Romanians voted "yes" to both these questions.
