Romanian Govt Can Pay Livestock Farming Subsidies In 2010 – Interim Agric Min

Romanian interim Agriculture Minister Radu Berceanu asked livestock farmers to consent to receiving part of the subsidy for cattle and sheep in 2009 and the rest in the first two months of 2010, as the budget does not allow for the allocation of the entire amount at the moment.

Berceanu said this system was also used in 2008, when the economy was stronger, and the subsidies were paid in full in the first months of 2009.

Livestock farmers protested Wednesday the Government’s failure to pay the subsidies before the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Presidency headquarters.

The first round of negotiations between farmers affiliated with the Agrostar union and Agriculture Ministry officials has ended, but talks will be resumed after the Government meeting in which interim minister Radu Berceanu will outline the union’s complaints.

Union members said Berceanu proposed splitting the subsidy into three installments, but this offer was not accepted.

About 500 farmers protested Wednesday outside the Finance Ministry and 200 others outside the Agriculture Ministry because they weren’t paid subsidies and said the animal breeding sector risks bankruptcy. Farmers threatened to bring their sheep, goats and cattle to Bucharest for future protests unless they get their money.
