The act, which amends Law 20/2000 on Romania’s public pension system and related social security rights, was adopted in the Chamber of Deputies in September.

The Executive challenged the law before the Constitutional Court, saying the pension increases cannot be supported by the state budget and that the law includes discriminatory elements.

The Court, however, ruled the law was constitutional and had reasonable justification. The necessary financing is a matter that regards the relationship between Parliament and Government.

Still on Saturday, Basescu signed the decrees to promulgate two other laws, one regarding salaries of staff with the National Housing Agency, and the other one regarding the establishment of a national system to promote electric energy production from renewable sources.
