Romanian social democrat leader Mircea Geoana said Tuesday President Traian Basescu “faked mediation” and came up with the “hypocritical” solution of appointing an independent interior minister, to which social democrats proposed an independent prime minister.

Geoana did attend the talks called for by the president, although he had refused the invitation earlier saying the case of social democrat Interior Minister Dan Nica is not a topic for discussion with the president.
Geoana said Nica's dismissal will cause the country's ruling coalition to split, adding this is the third Cabinet Basescu is sabotaging.
Basescu invited Tuesday for talks the leaders of the country's ruling coalition parties, Prime Minister Emil Boc and Social Democratic Party head Mircea Geoana, amid a political dispute that could end with the spilt of the coalition.
Boc sent the President Tuesday the proposition to dismiss social democrat Interior Minister Dan Nica and to have democrat liberal Development Minister Vasile Blaga serve as interim because social democrats refused to nominate anyone.
Also Tuesday, Geoana wrote to Basescu and urged him to intervene and prevent a major political crisis that would be triggered with the sacking of Nica. Geoana said in his letter the president will be the one responsible for the country's political instability if he accepts the prime minister's proposition to sack the social democrat minister.
