Romanian president Traian Basescu sent a letter Tuesday to social democrat leader and Senate chairman Mircea Geoana regarding the debates on the legal codes.

Basescu thus replied to a letter sent to him Monday evening by Geoana on the same topic.
Geoana said Monday there is coherent and solid information that points to the risk of European funds being cut after the European Commission’s report on Romanian justice. Geoana then asked Traian Basescu to take action, together with the institutions concerned, to prevent this risk.
"In this context, our party’s decision is to send the Criminal Code and Civil Code, completed in the Parliament’s special committees, to the president of Romania, reminding the President that he was the one to call a meeting at the Presidential Palace with all decision makers, to find solutions for a positive report by the European Commission regarding Romania," Geoana said.
In reply, Basescu said Geoana’s statements regarding the EU funds are regrettable and obviously electoral.
"Last week, Romania’s President, Traian Basescu, had a telephone conversation with Mircea Geoana, where he warned he would send a letter to the president of the two parties in Government, as well as to the leaders of the two Chambers of Parliament, drawing attention to the fact that delays in the enactment of the Codes and the blocking in Parliament of corruption case files could bring damages to Romania," said a press release issued by the Presidency.
The president said Geoana’s statements are regrettable.
"Mircea Geoana’s statements, made Monday, May 11, are regrettable. The head of state expected from Mircea Geoana a more mature approach and not an attempt to relieve himself of the responsibility for the blocking in Parliament of corruption case files, as well as for the delays in the enactment of the Codes. In this context we remind that the Codes, as well as the corruption files, are in Parliament. In other words, the mending of delays in the enactment of the Codes and the unblocking of the corruption files falls under the direct responsibilities of the Government coalition, implicitly under the political responsibility of Mircea Geoana," the press release reads.
After the press release issued by the presidency, Geoana sent Basescu an open letter, asking him to call an immediate meeting "of all factors in charge with the continuation of reform in justice," claiming Romania is at risk of being sanctioned by the EU in connection with a new European Commission evaluation.
Mircea Geoana said Tuesday that Basescu’s accusations regarding the attempt to boycott the enactment of the legal Codes are false, as Basescu is trying to cast the blame on the Parliament and on the social democrats.
