The youngest daughter of Romanian president Traian Basescu, Elena Basescu, said Wednesday in a press conference that she is quitting the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) and will run independently for a seat in the European Parliament and plans to return to the party if she wins the election.
Romanian President’s Daughter Quits Party To Run For EP Independently
Elena Basescu made a press statement at the party’s headquarters a few weeks ago and announced that she submitted her candidacy for a seat in the European Parliament after she received the confidence vote of the party’s youth organization, of which she is a member.
"Ever since, there has been a constant media campaign which can only damage my father and PDL. Contrary to what the media has reported, I want you to know that my father never forced me to run for the EP, nor did the party accept me on its list of candidates because of my father,” she said, adding the list of candidates for European Parliament elections has not yet been approved by the party’s national standing office.
"I don’t want to hide behind some party’s lists and I don’t want my father accused of nepotism and put PDL in the difficult position of having to choose between me and intellectuals, therefore I have decided to resign from PDL,” the president’s daughter said, adding she would run for a seat in the European Parliament independently.
She also said she would return to the party after the election to be held on June 7.
"I am aware that I don’t stand a real chance to win a seat in the European Parliament, especially since the law gives me until April 7 to collect 100,000 signatures, which is next to impossible. There’s a chance I won’t even collect all these signatures, but I’ll try,” Basescu said.
