Romanian President Says Center-Left Ruling Coalition Was Necessary Compromise
Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday evening in a speech in Parliament that the country’s center-left ruling coalition, which resulted from parliamentary elections last year, was a necessary political compromise.

Basescu said he would have preferred a center-right coalition, with liberals joining democrat liberals. However, as liberals refused and social democrats refused to allow the Hungarian minority party UDMR in the governing coalition, the compromise was to have a center-left coalition of democrat liberals and social democrats, which has 70% support in Parliament.
"This solution was adopted because the country urgently needed a government with strong parliamentary support. As president, I acted pragmatically, within the boundaries of the Constitution, for the better interest of Romanians, despite political adversities toward the Social Democratic Party," Basescu told lawmakers, adding he considered the center-left alliance as a necessary political compromise at that time and sees it the same way now.
