Romanian President Warns Unsolved Corruption Cases Mean Unfavorable EC Report
Romanian President Traian Basescu told a news conference Monday that, if the country fails to make progress in solving high-level corruption cases, the report on justice the European Commission will release this summer will be negative.

The head of state said the most significant aspect noted by the EC interim report released Friday concerns high-level corruption cases which, according to the report, "have seen little movement in court". He said the High Court of Justice has a major responsibility in making things move.
Basescu said the report shows the country responded in a constructive way to the recommendations made by the Commission in July and December 2010.
He highlighted that the positive aspects noted by the interim report should not be regarded as a victory, adding he will insist on what should further be done.
According to the EC's interim report on Romania's progress under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, the Romanian Anticorruption Department (DNA) maintained "its convincing track record in investigating high level corruption", but high-level corruption cases have seen little movement in court.
Romania should focus on measures improving the celerity of high-level corruption trials and strengthening general anti-corruption policy until the European Commission's next assessment, reads the report.
