Romania’s President Traian Basescu on Sunday urged for decentralization of state institutions, saying Romanians are more inclined to trust local administration than the central one, as local officials only think about the wellbeing of the community.

“Mayoralties, mayors are Romania’s most trusted institutions in the administration. They outrank by far both the government and the parliament, and are competing with the presidential administration,” Basescu said in his speech at the General Assembly of Romanian Cities.
“I want to believe that the next government will understand that it does not matter how many hospital directors or school principals report to a minister, but how well those services respond to the community’s needs,” Basescu added.
He assured the mayors present at the event that he would remain a supporter of the decentralization and of transparency of proceedings to allocate budget resources for local communities, so that they are able to unfold multiannual projects.
