Romanian priests can run as independent candidates for local elections, with the approval of the local bishop, Thursday said Constantin Stoica, the spokesperson of the Romanian Patriarchy.

If priests stray off the path of moral conduct and become involved in activities other than those they engaged in, they will lose the bishop’s support and be forced to resign, Stoica said.

Father Stoica said this does not mean priests will become involved in the political life but simply that they wish to continue their mission within the local community.

The decision was taken during the Thursday meeting of the Holy Synod but the problem is still up for discussions.
