Romanian Prime Minister To Analyze Solutions Regarding Education Laws

Boc said Friday during a visit at the Transylvania Highway work site in Cluj county, western Romania, that the education system was modernized “here and there, but not in its essential parts.”

“I will make a thorough analysis of the two solutions proposed by the presidential commission, presided by Mircea Miclea, and that of the Education Ministry,” Boc said, adding that after the analysis, the best solution will be adopted as law, for which the government will assume responsibility.

On Monday, Prime Minister Emil Boc said the government would take responsibility in Parliament, on September 2, for the unitary pay law in the budget sector, the law restructuring government agencies, and the laws on pension-wage cumulus and on education.

Boc also said the social democrat partners in the ruling coalition voiced out no "major objections" with respect to the government taking responsibility on the four sets of laws on September 2, adding, however, there was a “discussion" regarding the laws on education, which will be resumed soon.

Social democrats later denied having agreed with the government taking responsibility for laws on education, saying they should undergo public debate. If public debate is completed by September 2, social democrats agree with the enactment of the laws by assuming responsibility, but only if the respective laws are those proposed by social democrat education minister Ecaterina Andronescu.

Democrat liberal Sulfina Barbu said the draft laws on education drawn up by the education minister are not in accordance with the government's program, laid out in the Partnership for Romania that coalition parties signed at the end of 2008. The agreement stipulated that the education reform should be made according to the Education Pact signed by education unions and political parties, which is based on education laws drawn up by a presidential commission.

The Democrat Liberal Party opted for the education pack of law set up by the presidential commission, Sulfina Barbu said, adding that the Government will assume responsibility on this pack of law on September 2, date until the social democrats can present their own suggestions regarding the improvement of the laws.
