Romanian Private Killed In Afghanistan Repatriated

The lifeless body of Romanian second lieutenant (post-mortem) Ionut Cosmin Sandu, killed in Afghanistan Thursday, was repatriated Sunday.

Sandu was brought to the Bobocu air base, eastern Romania, where a military-religious ceremony will be held. The ceremony will be attended by defense minister Teodor Melescanu.

Sandu will be buried Tuesday in Galati, eastern Romania.

The minister of defense promoted Sandu post mortem Friday, at the proposal of the head of General Staff.

Private first class Ionut Cosmin Sandu died, and corporal Silviu Atanasiu was injured in the left leg, when their Humvee ran over an improvised explosive device.

When the blast occurred, the soldiers were carrying out a patrol mission in the Zabul province.

Sandu, 29, is survived by his wife and two children.
