Romanian Prosecutors Question Maternity Hospital Interim Manager In Fire Case

People close to the investigation said several employees of the maternity hospital have been called in for questioning. Also Monday, a team of prosecutors is to discuss the forensic expertise regarding the hospital fire.

Nicolau was previously questioned on August 25 and was asked to bring in a series of documents. The former hospital manager, Bogdan Marinescu, was also questioned on August 25.

The entire hospital management team has been suspended by order of Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu until the investigation is finished. The hospital has also been closed.

Authorities have arrested the nurse who was on duty on August 16, Florentina Cirstea, who was charged with manslaughter. An appeal against her arrest is pending a ruling Monday. Authorities also briefly detained the head of the hospital's technical staff, Vasile Dima, who has been charged with gross negligence.

Two of the parents whose babies died in the fire said they would sue the hospital for moral damages, but have not stated how much they would claim.

The six babies who suffered severe burns in the fire that broke out in the maternity hospital's intensive care unit on August 16 are still under intensive medical care.
