Romanian Prosecutors Request Financial Checkups In Youth Day Scandal

“The National Anticorruption Department (DNA) asked the Financial Guard to check the commercial companies involved. The checkups have started a few days ago and are supervised by DNA. We will establish whether the economic operations (for the Youth Day festivities – e.n.) have brought damages to the state budget, in the form of unpaid dues and taxes,” ANAF head Sorin Blejnar said.

The Parliament commission looking into the Youth Day scandal recommended on Thursday that the prime minister dismisses youth minister Monica Iacob Ridzi and requested her prosecution on charges of embezzlement and abuse of office.

The commission also requested ANAF, the Competition Council and the Court of Accounts looked into the contracts signed with companies Artisan and Mark, which organized the Youth Day festivities.

Democrat liberal MPs in the commission have issued a separate opinion, in a report saying that although the Youth Day contracts were flawed, there were no illegalities and the examination has been insufficient, so they do not support prosecuting the youth minister.
