FNSA leader Valer Suciu said he doesn't think that Romania's Government and President will give into the protests, and he called on lawmakers to vote against the Cabinet's austerity plan, "no matter what party they belong to".

According to Suciu, some 65,000 civil servants in over 1,600 institutions countrywide took part in Monday's full-blown strike.

Romania's Government adopted the austerity plan Sunday, through which cutbacks on public sector wages, pensions and other social benefits will be enforced.

The Government will seek a confidence vote in Parliament for the austerity plan. Confidence vote procedures started Monday, when the Parliament received the two draft laws.

Romania's opposition social democrats said they will file a no-confidence motion in Parliament against the Government, after the two draft laws are presented before the two Chambers.

Opposition liberals said they will draft their own version of the no-confidence motion, which they will negotiate with the social democrats.
