Romanian President Basescu Accused Of Nepotism
"Five years ago, I started a campaign against nepotism in the university system, which led to the creation of the Romanian Academic Forum, a non-government organization in the education sector. I have joined the presidential committee as an expert on education matters, not as a representative of the NGO. However, the political involvement of Elena Basescu creates a conflict of interests as I cannot be a member of a presidential committee and at the same time criticize the president and his family,” Stamate said.
Asked what the president’s daughter involved in politics has to do with issues of the academic environment, Stamate said the fact that such “behavior is encouraged in politics” could reflect in the academic environment, especially considering that many politicians are also teachers.
"Even the fact that she was elected with 98% of the votes proves how immature our society is,” Stamate said, adding he is not a member of any political party.
