Representatives of SNFP gathered in Victoriei Square around 10 a.m., demanding that the law stipulating a 50% wage hike for teachers and the legal protection for all employees of the control institutions be enforced, as previously negotiated with the Government.
“Today’s protest (Thursday - e.n.) eyes to eliminate any suspicions that the public servants are responsible for the failure of the governing program in this sector and signals that we will no longer accept to be the politicians’ “stepping stone” in their electoral campaign,” a statement of SNFP read.
The unionists decided to picket the Government building following disagreement with the representatives of the Economy and Finance Ministry on Monday.
“Our protest will stop only if the normative acts regulating protection for the public servants protection in control institutions and a unitary law on state employees wages are enforced,” unionist leader Sebastian Oprescu said Thursday.
Thursday, public servants in the financial administrations, treasuries, customs, pension houses, statistics directorates, city halls, local councils and social protection sectors were on a warning strike from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Sed Lex president Vasile Marica said last week over 100,000 public servants affiliated to Sed Lex and to the Local Administration in Cluj county, northwestern Romania, will go on full-scale strike on October 9, blocking the activity in treasuries, pension houses and city halls.
The National Federation of Unions in the Administration (FNSA) recently sent a letter to Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu and to the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate asking wage hikes for all state employees.
The National Federation of Unions in sanitary units and spa resorts (TESA) threaten to start protests as of next month unless administrative staff receives a 60% wage hike as of Nov 1.
The Romanian Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved last Tuesday Ordinance 15/2008 amended by the leftist opposition Social Democratic Party stipulating a 50% wage raise for staff in the education system.
The Chamber of Deputies has the final say on this normative act.
