Romanian Retirees Want Pension Point Set At 45% Of Average Gross Wage

Pensioners said the pension point decreased to 39% of the average gross wage, adding the pension point is even lower than in 2008, when it was set at 42%.

Retirees demand that pensions exceeding 1,500 lei (EUR1=RON4.1167) be gradually taxed and that health insurance contributions be retained only for these pensions.

Retirees also demand that inequities affecting certain categories of pensioners be taken into account and solved, according to Law 218/2008.

Romanian Pensioners' Union Federation also called on the Parliament and Government to observe Law 250/2007 setting the pension point at 45% of the average gross wage, threatening to resort to radical protests this year.

Pensioners are displeased with the government's decision to freeze the pension point in 2010 and said they shall not settle for the authorities' argument targeting scarce funds.

The social security budget for 2010 sets the pension point at the last year's level, namely RON732.8, and the average gross wage for 2010 is of RON1,836, which means the pension point stands at 39.9% of the average gross wage.
