Cristi Minculescu, the lead singer of Romanian rock band Iris, is suffering from polycystic liver and kidney disease and needs a liver transplant, and his wife is a potential donor.
Romanian Rock Band Iris Frontman Needs Liver Transplant
"He is suffering from polycystic liver and kidney disease. It’s a hereditary disease he inherited from his father," Minculescu’s doctor, Dorel Sandesc, said in a press conference Thursday.
"The illness is progressive since birth,” the doctor added.
Minculescu is currently in Germany for a series of medical tests at a clinic specializing in liver and kidney surgery and transplants. The doctor said he was put on a waiting list for a liver transplant and the possibility to use his wife as donor is also considered.
Although the only solution for Minculescu is having a liver transplant, his doctor said his case is not an emergency.
The band suspended a countrywide tour and cancelled a concert in Timisoara, western Romania.
"We’ve decided to suspend the tour, as doctors recommended. He can’t handle this rhythm," said band manager Cosmin Nicoara.
Numerous rumors spread over the years regarding Minculescu’s health and many alleged he is suffering from cirrhosis.
The band was founded in 1976, in Bucharest, and Miculescu joined the team as lead singer in 1980.
In October 2007, when the band turned 30, the band was decorated by President Traian Basescu and their anniversary concert gathered over 15,000 fans.
