The ordinance was adopted in the form put forward by the Government, as the plenary session rejected the amendments proposed by the committee for budget and finances.
The emergency ordinance amending the Law on local public finances sets cost and quality standards for local administrations, by limiting the number of employees and costs in relation to the size of the commune, town or city.
Prime Minister Emil Boc, who attended the Senate meeting, argued the law was necessary to rationalize local public spending and the local administration work apparatus. He pointed out the wide disparities as regards staff size between local administration bodies in communes and towns of similar population.
