The president of the Commission, social democrat Victor Ponta said this provision is an “important step”. The Commission decided that people who commit several crimes will be subject to an increased punishment. Ponta explained that the increase is one third of the other sentences combined. He noted that currently this is increase is not mandatory, but is left up to the judge.

Ponta added that MPs in the Commission have completed the definition for ‘a crime’, which is the “foundation of the Criminal Code.” Debates on the Code will continue through Wednesday.
