Liberal Senator Puiu Hasotti said the decision to return the draft act to the Labor Committee is in fact an attempt of the ruling coalition to tacitly pass the bill in the Senate, as the chamber’s busy agenda will not allow for a debate before the deadline for tacit approval expires.

The liberals, as well as the representatives of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), are against imposing a ban on amassing pensions and wages in the public sector, arguing the act would limit the freedom of retirees.

“We cannot restrict the right to work based on the pension’s level,” said UDMR Senator Gyorgy Frunda, president of the Committee for Human Rights Protection.

Romanian government in April decided retirees who took new jobs in the public sector are prohibited from collecting state pensions if their pensions top the average monthly wage.
