Romanian Senate Denies Alleged CIA Detention Centers In Romania
The investigation commission’s report states lawmakers heard over 200 people, had more than 60 meetings with members of the Council of Europe Commission and heads of intelligence units in Romania.
"To the question of whether Romania hosted secret American bases, the commission answers negatively," the report states.
The parliament commission also gave a negative answer to the question of alleged detention facilities on Romanian soil. Lawmakers also said U.S. civil flights, that allegedly carried prisoners, could not have gone unnoticed.
Lawmakers said Romanian civil aeronautics authorities and other institutions investigated have no knowledge of any civil planes landing in or hovering over Romania, operated or rented by the U.S. Central Intelligence agency or a company acting on behalf of the CIA.
No approval was ever requested for any flight operated by the CIA or an agent of the agency.
The report has attached a note by the head of the Romanian Intelligence Service at that time, stating the service "hold no information attesting the existence of detention centers in Romania."
