Romanian Senate Rejects President Basescu’s Pension Bill Reexamination Request
Senators also rejected the labor committee’s report to the pension bill reexamination request. The report included about 100 amendments, which were all discarded.
Earlier Wednesday, senators adopted an amendment proposed by social democrat senator Toni Grebla and democrat liberal senator Cristian Radulescu, which set the retirement age at 63 for women and at 65 for men, as suggested by Basescu in his reexamination request.
The pension bill had been sent back to Parliament for reexamination by the head of state, who requested lawmakers lower the set retirement age for women to 63 instead of 65.
The Senate’s committee for legal matters decided in October that more articles of the unitary pension bill would be reexamined, besides the article indicated by the president.
Debates on the reexamination requests will continue in the Chamber of Deputies, which has the final say on the matter.
