Romanian Senator Arrested For Corruption Stays In Custody

Romanian social democrat senator Catalin Voicu, arrested for corruption, will remain in custody over Easter, as a Bucharest court rejected Friday his appeal for release on medical grounds.

Voicu was arrested late Tuesday for 30 days but was admitted early Wednesday at the prison hospital after complaining of heart problems.

Last week, Romania's Senate voted to lift Voicu's immunity from prosecution, allowing anticorruption prosecutors to demand his arrest.

Prosecutors say he received bribes from several businessmen, allegedly to pay judges for favorable outcomes in court cases. Voicu denies the allegations.
