Under the draft law, working pregnant women have the right to a pregnancy leave of 24 weeks, during which they get maternity benefits.
Pregnant women would be entitled to nine weeks of leave before they give birth and 15 weeks after.
The government did not back this draft because the initial legal proposition aimed to amend Law 19/2000 regarding the public system of pensions and other social rights, a law that was repealed by government emergency decree 158/2005.
The Senate’s labor commission amended the legal proposition and replaced the reference to the repealed law with a reference to the decree.
The law is pending approval in the Chamber of Deputies.
