The secretary general of Romania’s leftist opposition Social Democratic Party, Titus Corlatean, urged Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu Friday to suspend Petre Roman from the position of government representative for Romanians abroad, accusing the latter of using public money to pay for his election campaign.
Romanian Social Democrat Accuses Govt Official Of Campaigning Using Public Money
During a press conference Friday, Corlatean, called on the prime minister to suspend Roman from his position of government official claiming the latter, from the position of liberal candidate for a seat in Senate to represent Romanians in Europe and Asia, uses public money for his election campaign.
"Petre Roman is campaigning using public money, taking advantage of the position he was appointed in before the campaign. He uses the budget generously assigned by the government to campaign in Italy and throughout Europe. I urge the Government and the prime minster to suspend Petre Roman from his position to give him an opportunity to campaign on his own money or that of companies willing to sponsor him,” Corlatean said.
He added he expects the measure to be taken “as soon as possible”. Corlatean also said his move was prompted by a notice on Roman from the League of Associations of Romanians in Italy.
"Twenty-three such organizations sent a notice in this respect and they also sent it to the Government,” Corlatean said.
Romania holds a general election on November 30.
