Romanian Social Democrat Leader Apologizes To Those He Disappointed In Elections

Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Mircea Geoana, speaking in the party’s National Council on Thursday, apologized to those he disappointed, but said that blaming the party’s failure in the presidential elections on a single person would be unfair.

Geoana began his speech by pointing out that all eyes are on the social democrat congress and it should not turn into a „beauty contest.”

The social democrat leader apologized to those he disappointed, mentioning his visit to controversial businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vantu the night before a final political debate with rival candidate Traian Basescu.

Geoana said he takes responsibility for the party’s failure, but stated that the practice of „killing leaders at times of frustration” should not carry on.

Geoana also said he strived to turn PSD into a modern social democratic party.

Mircea Geoana was the Social Democratic Party’s candidate in the presidential elections last fall, but was defeated in the runoff by Traian Basescu. Geoana is currently seeking re-election as party president, facing competition from former prime minister Adrian Nastase, former foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu and other party heavyweights.
