Romanian Social Democrat Leader Sees PM-Designate As President’s Worst Choice

Romanian social democrat leader Mircea Geoana said Thursday the decision made by President Traian Basescu to designate acting Prime Minister Emil Boc for a new term is unfit and shows Basescu’s second term as president might be even worse than the first.

Geoana said the prime minister designation made by Basescu is the worst the president could make, but added the country’s top priority is to have a new Government in place to adopt the state budget.

Romania’s newly reelected President Traian Basescu Thursday designated democrat liberal leader and acting Prime Minister Emil Boc to head the country’s new government.

Boc’s Cabinet collapsed in a no-confidence vote in Parliament in October after social democrats switched to opposition, but his government has remained in office with limited powers because the Parliament thumbed down the cabinet proposed by economist Lucian Croitoru and then refused to even hold a vote on a second prime minister-designate.
