Protesters who took to the streets on May 1 called for a new Government to solve the country’s social and economic issues. Their main dissatisfactions were triggered by the Government’s anti-crisis measures which entail spending cuts and layoffs in the public sector.

Recession-hit Romania pledged to cut public spending, reduce its budget deficit and reform its pension system under an IMF-led international bailout package of nearly EUR20 billion.

To accomplish its commitments, the Government drew up new wage and pension laws to make salary and pension systems sustainable and avoid a financial collapse.

Protests against the provisions of the two laws were staged countrywide and unionists threatened to go on full-blown strike if the Government turns a blind eye on their problems and fails to solve their demands.
