PSD president Victor Ponta said earlier that the party’s leadership and senators have decided to put forward Titus Corlatean for Senate President, while incumbent Geoana would take over as head of the upper house’s committee for foreign policy.

On Monday, people close to the matter told MEDIAFAX that the party’s National Bureau voted to ask Geoana to tender his resignation.

Ponta said that, based on a Constitutional Court ruling, the political group to which the Senate president belongs can decide to replace him/her with another member of the group. Ponta added that every social democrat and liberal senator will support Titus Corlatean for this position.

Geoana has been criticized recently by several PSD leaders, following his attacks on certain party bigwigs.
