Romanian Social Democrats Demand Majority-Endorsed Prime Minister By Nov 14

The Romanian Social Democratic Party calls on President Traian Basescu to appoint a prime minister endorsed by the current Parliament majority by November 14, when the interim terms of eight ministers expire, party vice-president Victor Ponta told a news conference Friday.

Ponta said that without the eight ministers, Romania would face complete government and administrative obstruction. He added that President Basescu is aware of this situation and is hiding it from the public.

Ponta also said that the ministers proposed by Prime Minister-designate Lucian Croitoru were rejected on the basis of competence, not just politics. Ponta cited democrat liberal leader Theodor Stolojan’s Friday statement, whereby pensions and salaries could be cut, as an example of the incompetence of Adriean Videanu and Gheorghe Pogea, who were proposed by Croitoru for another term as minister of economy and minister of finance, respectively.
