Romania’s Interior Ministry said Friday it was notified by the internal affairs attachée in London of the new traffic regulations targeting foreign citizens.

Thus, Romanians traveling to Great Britain ought to know that people driving cars registered outside Great Britain and violating British traffic rules are fined up to GBP900 by police officers, who could also request the fine be paid on the spot.

If law-breaking drivers cannot pay the fines or their cars have technical problems, the police may as well seize their cars until fines are paid or the technical problems are solved.

The ministry also said that, prior to the coming into force of the new provisions, the British police could only fine foreign drivers without any guarantees whatsoever that fines will be paid within 28 days.

"The Interior Ministry recommends that Romanian citizens willing to travel to Great Britain by car should first get thorough information on the legal provisions regulating traffic rules in Great Britain and observe them," the ministry said.
