Romanian Social Democrats Prefer Temp Wage Reduction Over 20% Cut In Public Sector Jobs

Nita said social democrats would rather choose to temporarily lower wages in the public sector by 20% and keep jobs. The minister added the government never discussed a 20% cut in jobs in the public sector.

He explained the government has discussed the need to lower public spending and to restructure the public administration, but the 20% figure was never put forth.

Nita also said the issue of potential job cuts in the public sector will be discussed in the ruling coalition meeting Monday morning and coalition leaders will look for ways to keep jobs.

He also said that if the government decides to cut jobs, it will be as a last resort and only after talks with unions and professional associations.

The SMEs minister said several ministers have proposed restructuring plans for their own sectors and he proposed to turn most government agencies under the authority of the SMEs Ministry into department, and only keep the Consumer Protection Agency and State Office for Inventions and Trademarks. The minister said this restructuring plan would cut 24% of jobs within the ministry.
