Romanian Social Democrats Quit Govt If President Signs Interior Minister’s Dismissal

"Prime Minister Boc and the Democratic Liberal Party have a clear and simple solution at hand, which is to go back to normal and take back the dismissal," Nica said, adding social democatrt ministers will quit within 30 minutes if the president signs the decree firing him.

"We will quit within 30 minutes because we cannot be part of a move that destabilizes Romania and throws Romanians' interests in the trash can," Nica said, adding the prime minister and the president are to blame for the country's recent political turmoil.

Nica also said social democrat ministers will attend today's Cabinet meeting, after they refused to show up for talks with coalition partners this morning. People close to the Democratic Liberal Party told MEDIAFAX Boc plans to give social democrats an ultimatum in today's Cabinet meeting, to appoint another interior minister.

The prime minister moved to fire Nica Monday citing poor management and an increased crime rate. Social democrats dismissed Boc's move as an attempt to gain control of the Interior Ministry, which organizes and oversees presidential elections due on November 22, when coalition parties back rival candidates.

President Basescu, who headed the Democratic Liberal Party but who is now formally independent, has not yet said whether he will run for a second term.
