PSD will send their request both to their ruling coalition partners and to President Traian Basescu.
PSD sources told MEDIAFAX that if the Justice report is unfavorable, the party will publicly state that Basescu is partly responsible, as he was the one who pushed for Predoiu as Minister.
Although the PSD leadership has not decided on possible demands should Predoiu be dismissed, several party leaders said the party would be justified in claiming the ministry. The social democrats’ argument is that although the ruling protocol between the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) and PSD stipulates an independent candidate must be selected for the Justice Ministry, PSD could invoke the principle of minister parity, as the social democrats have lost a seat in the Government after the position of deputy prime minister was merged with that of interior minister.
PSD National Council president Adrian Nastase told MEDIAFAX Tuesday that if the EC’s report on justice is unfavorable, Predoiu “is obviously the main person to blame”. PSD honorary president Ion Iliescu said Predoiu’s dismissal is possible, but difficult to anticipate at this time.
PDL sources said that Predoiu’s dismissal might happen after the EC report, regardless whether it is positive or negative. PDL leaders anticipate the justice minister’s resignation, arguing that his term comprised developing the legal codes and managing the justice system until the July report.
